The 203 DPI printer has been converted by POSGuys from a 300 DPI model

All renewed models are warrantied directly by POSGuys.

Industrial printing that fits your budget

The Zebra ZT230 is the all-metal model in the ZT200 Series, a family developed from extensive customer feedback and lessons learned from earlier Zebra industrial printers. Its space-saving design combines straightforward setup, intuitive operation, and accessible service and maintenance for light-industrial and commercial labeling.

The ZT230 adds a graphical LCD interface and full-function keypad for environments that change label formats or printer settings frequently. Zebra discontinued new sales of the ZT230 on June 27, 2022 and identifies the ZT231 as its replacement; this description remains useful for existing deployments and any remaining inventory.

See the ZT230 enclosure, controls, and media path in this POSGuys-created product review.

Designed with You in Mind

You Spoke. We Listened.

The ZT200 Series design reflects Zebra customers' printing applications, evolving business needs, and operational challenges. The ZT230 packages that input into a durable metal printer intended to deliver strong functionality and value without the footprint of a larger industrial model.

Engineered for Versatility and Outstanding Value

Intuitive and Powerful Operation

The ZT230 supports organizations adopting barcode labeling for the first time as well as those replacing older equipment. Its multilingual graphical LCD, keypad, bi-color status LEDs, and ENERGY STAR certification are designed to simplify daily operation while controlling lifecycle costs.

Small Footprint. Easy to Maintain.

A streamlined cabinet and bi-fold media door use less operating space than the legacy S4M. Tool-less printhead and platen removal simplify routine cleaning and replacement, and the durable design is intended to reduce training and service effort.

Engineered for Versatility and Outstanding Value

Simple to Integrate and Manage

Zebra's Link-OS environment combines a multiplatform software development kit with printer applications for integration and management. ZPL and ZPL II support Zebra label formats, while EPL compatibility on eligible 203 dpi configurations can help preserve legacy applications during migration.

Transformed from the Inside

The printer hardware works with Zebra's operating environment and printer software tools for deployment, management, development, and visibility. Available capabilities depend on the installed firmware, interfaces, and software in an existing ZT230 deployment.

Engineered for Versatility and Outstanding Value

Meets a Variety of Application Needs

The ZT230 is sized for manufacturing, transportation and logistics, healthcare, and retail workflows. Zebra lists item and specimen tagging, shelf-edge labels, packaging labels, shipping and receiving labels, inventory identification, and other applications that benefit from a durable compact printer.

Direct thermal printing supports ribbon-free, shorter-life labels. Thermal transfer configurations add ribbon-based durability, and optional 300 dpi resolution supports smaller text and denser label content when properly qualified with the intended media.

ZT200 Series Offers Two Models to Best Suit Your Needs

The ZT230

The ZT230 uses a rugged all-metal case and an icon-based multilingual graphical LCD with a full-function keypad. Zebra positioned it for barcode-labeling applications that require frequent changes to label formats or printer settings and for replacing S4M installations.

Space-Saving Design

The closed printer measures 17 inches deep by 9.5 inches wide by 10.9 inches high and weighs 20 pounds. Its bi-fold door requires approximately 4 inches of opening space, helping it fit into confined work areas while still accepting large industrial media rolls.

ZT200 Series Offers Two Models to Best Suit Your Needs

Fast Installation and Integration

USB 2.0 and RS-232 serial are standard. Depending on configuration, the ZT230 can add parallel, 10/100 Ethernet, or 802.11a/b/g/n wireless connectivity. Virtual-device and language-compatibility tools can reduce changes when replacing an earlier Zebra or supported third-party printer.

Intuitive, Effortless Media Loading

Side loading avoids complicated media threading, while color-coded touch points guide ribbon and media placement. Illuminated multi-position transmissive and reflective sensors are visible through the media, making sensor-position adjustment easier during format changes.

ZT200 Series Offers Two Models to Best Suit Your Needs

Print Quality, Reliability and Durability

Fine-tuned adjustments help the printer produce clean text and barcodes, including on narrower media. The metal frame, metal media cover, thin-film printhead, and E3 Element Energy Equalizer support consistent operation in light-industrial and commercial environments.

ZT200 Series Offers Two Models to Best Suit Your Needs

Simplified Serviceability

The platen and printhead can be removed without tools for routine cleaning and replacement. Interchangeable connectivity options simplify changes and upgrades, and Zebra states that only three common tools are needed for basic service.

Supplies, Service and Support

Zebra Certified Supplies

Zebra Certified Supplies are manufactured for consistent readability and scannability from roll to roll. Zebra recommends qualifying the exact printer, media, ribbon, resolution, and speed used in production because those variables affect registration, print quality, and minimum label length.

Supplies, Service and Support

Zebra OneCare Services

Zebra originally offered service agreements to improve uptime and make annual maintenance expense more predictable. The ZT230 is now discontinued, so organizations maintaining an installed printer should confirm current service eligibility and parts availability before relying on any coverage.

Specifications

Printer Specifications

The ZT230 prints up to 4.09 inches wide at up to 6 inches per second. Standard resolution is 203 dpi, with 300 dpi available as an option. It includes 128 MB SDRAM and 128 MB on-board Flash, transmissive and reflective media sensing, and maximum print lengths of 157 inches at 203 dpi or 73 inches at 300 dpi.

Media Characteristics

Supported media is 0.75 to 4.50 inches wide and 0.003 to 0.010 inch thick. The supply hanger accepts an 8-inch outside-diameter roll on a 3-inch core or a 6-inch roll on a 1-inch core, including continuous, die-cut, notched, and black-mark media.

Ribbon Characteristics (Thermal-transfer option only)

Thermal-transfer configurations accept ribbon from 1.57 to 4.33 inches wide on a 1-inch core, with a standard maximum length of 1,476 feet/450 meters. Ribbon capability does not apply to direct-thermal-only configurations.

Specifications

Operating Characteristics

Thermal-transfer operation is specified from 40° to 105°F, and direct-thermal operation from 32° to 105°F, at 20% to 85% non-condensing humidity. The universal auto-ranging 100-240 VAC power supply is ENERGY STAR certified.

Software Tools

Zebra's development, management, productivity, and visibility tools support printer integration, fleet control, workflow improvements, and printer-health insight. Availability can depend on firmware, licensing, and the software still supported for a legacy ZT230 deployment.

Firmware

ZPL and ZPL II provide Zebra label formatting and printer control. EPL and EPL2 support eligible legacy workflows, while optional ZBI 2.0 can run stand-alone logic and connect supported peripherals.

Barcode Symbologies

The printer supports common linear and 2D barcode symbologies, including Code 128, UPC/EAN, Data Matrix, PDF417, MaxiCode, and QR Code.
